Charlaine holds a Master in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN and is a Licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker who came to social work as a second career. She was exposed to the value of social work as a hospice volunteer and decided to focus on one of her many talents which was to be with people as they experience change in their lives.
After graduating in 2006 with the MSW, she became an executive and manager with a large faith-based nonprofit with programs that provide services to the community from birth (pregnancy center) to death (elderly homeless shelter and Alzheimer’s Day Stay program). During this time, she became FEMA disaster certified and worked with trauma survivors as they stabilized and began to create new lives for themselves.
Her final title with this organization was Director of Programs – Housing & Outreach Services where she managed a multi-million dollar budget for programs providing services over 36 East Tennessee counties. The programs covered housing for homeless families, emergency shelters for the elderly and a HIV/AIDS specific shelter , thrift stores, emergency assistance & food banks, immigrant services and senior services.
She also sat on many community boards with other social service providers. She knows what it is like to both volunteer for, work within and set on the Board of Governor’s for a variety of nonprofits.
Because she is not hierarchical in her management style, much preferring to empower staff by leading in a matrix of roles, she brings a can-do attitude to her work with clients and finds that being willing to experience client’s lives from this inside perspective give greater leverage to the collaborative process.
She is married to her husband whom she has known since she was 7 years old and lives where she can see the mountains of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
